API 570 EXAM STUDY GUIDE

BOILER WATER CONDENSATE CORROSION

MODULE 2 : PART 9

API 571 : 4.3.5 : Boiler Water Condensate Corrosion

Description of Damage

* General Corrosion and pitting

* In the boiler system and condensate return piping

* internal only

Affected Materials

*CS

*Some Low Alloy Steels, Some 300 Series SS and Cu based alloys

*Most of the boiler piping will be of CS so this affects primarily to Carbon Steel

Other Critical Factors

*Corrosion protection in the boiler is done by maintaining a layer of protective Fe3O4 (Magnetite)

*Ammonia SCC of Cu-Zn alloys can occur due to hydrazine, neutralizing amines or ammonia-containing compounds. That means the compounds used for oxygen scavenging treatments may adversely affect Cu-Zn alloys in the system.

Inspection & Monitoring

*Water analysis is the common monitoring tool. pH, conductivity, Cl or residual biocide and TDS will be checked

*There are no proactive inspection methods for this DM.

Deaerator cracking can be found from WFMPI, during shutdowns.

Related Mechanisms

*CO2 corrosion

*Corrosion Fatigue

*Erosion/Corrosion-Corrosion
